The Detroit Pistons look to take another step toward securing a playoff berth with a road game against the Miami Heat tonight.

With just five games left in the regular season and effectively a three-game lead over the Chicago Bulls, the Detroit Pistons are just a numbers game away from returning to the NBA playoffs. The playoff probability calculations on basketball-reference.com give the Pistons an 89.5% chance to make the playoffs.

The standings say the Pistons are two games up on the Bulls, who sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, but a 3-1 win in the season series gives the Pistons the tie-breaker over Chicago. A Pistons win over the Miami Heat tonight combined with a Bulls loss at the Memphis Grizzlies moves the Pistons’ magic number down to one.

But tonight’s game is not a sure thing. The Heat have a playoff berth wrapped up but they are in a tight battle for home court advantage in the first round. Just a half game separates the 3 through 6 seeds in the East as the Heat jockey with the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Charlotte Hornets for the last two Eastern Conference seeds that will get a potential first round game seven at home.

The Heat may not be at full-strength tonight as guard Dwyane Wade has been ruled a game time decision. He missed the last two games dealing with neck and back soreness but was able to participate in yesterday’s team practice.
