Seventh Round

It’s hard to imagine that the Lions haven’t drafted a quarterback in any round since taking Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick back in 2009 but it’s true. With a new general manager comes a new philosophy as Bob Quinn is already on record as saying it makes good business sense to draft a quarterback at least every other year.

That’s not to say Quinn is any less confident in Stafford as the starter as the previous regime, but it does show he will place a greater emphasis on having quality young depth behind his franchise quarterback.

The Lions will have their pick of developmental quarterbacks on day three, including Louisiana Tech’s Jeff Driskel. Many football fans may remember Driskel from his disappointing play while with the Florida Gators but he rebuilt his draft stock playing his final year of eligibility as a grad transfer.

Driskel, like so many other quarterbacks the Lions will consider late in the 2016 NFL Draft, isn’t worth getting excited about right away. That being said, there is some upside to like more than with some other options late in the draft with Driskel’s combination of size, arm strength and athleticism.
