The Lions continue to build up their defensive line, using their third round compensatory pick to select Charles Tapper from Oklahoma. Tapper, weighing in at 6’4″ and 283 lbs., has the size and length Detroit likes in their defensive ends. He also offers position and scheme versatility. At Oklahoma, Tapper played both defensive tackle and defensive end.

Regardless of where he lined up, he showed glimpses of big-play ability, compiling 135 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 13.5 sacks during his Oklahoma playing career.

Though the Lions have talent at the defensive end position, Tapper would provide immediate depth, and a possible long-term upgrade. Ezekiel Ansah is a cornerstone of the franchise (but he will soon need to be re-signed to a new deal). Devin Taylor progressed last season, but it remains to be seen if the Lions trust him as their starter moving forward. Free agent Jason Jones is still a free agent, and not a Detroit Lion. And Larry Webster remains just a developmental prospect, spending most of his young Lions career on the practice squad.

Tapper is a great fit for the Lions in the third round.
