Detroit Lions Draft 2016: Seven-Round Mock Draft
By Erik Schlitt
Jatavis Brown is an undersized linebacker (5’10 3/4″, 225), who uses speed (4.44/40, 1.53/10), explosion (79 is Elite), and athleticism (SPARQ = 84.9%) to wreak havoc all over the field. Brown shows position flexibility as he was used in multiple spots at Akron. He graded out positively against the run and in coverage by Pro Football Focus, you can find their scouting report, here.
As productive as Brown is, he also faces several obstacles. He is undersized for the NFL linebacker position. He also is coming from Akron where there is a step down in competition. His tackling also needs improvement as he missed 13% of his tackles over the last two years.
So what do you do with a guy who is a better athlete than football player at this point in his career? He will need to land on a team who will understand how to use him creatively and be patient enough to use him specific situations (such as a blitzer or in sub packages) as he develops over time.
I believe his perfect position is as a “Money Linebacker”. The money linebacker is a relatively new position in the NFL, that utilizes undersized athletes in blitzing and coverage situations. PFF graded him as their fourth highest draft eligible linebacker in coverage situations. Brown’s above average athleticism and skill set would bring a new wrinkle to any defensive scheme.
For more information on the “Money Linebacker”, why I think Detroit will add this new position to their defense and how Jatavis Brown (and others) fit in this role, check out my article post, here.
