Chicago White Sox

First Game: April 29, 1901

Detroit has long had a rivalry with the City of Chicago that transcends sports. At one point both cities were among the largest in the U.S., which of course is no longer the case. In sports, the Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls are dirty words here in the Motor City.

For a long time, the Tigers and White Sox rivalry was dead, largely because Chicago was a pretty bad organization for many years. They finally won a World Series for the first time in 88 years in 2005, and the upstart 2006 Tigers seemingly had to go through the defending champs to end their own postseason futility.

It turns out that was not the case, but the two teams did have very competitive games that season, and many seasons after, including 2012. That season, the Tigers lost their final game of the season to the White Sox on Sept. 17, going down three games in the division with just 16 games to play. Detroit caught fire, Chicago bit the gas pipe, and the Tigers went all the way to the World Series.
