Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has shrugged off his slow April with an unbelievable month of May.

Miguel Cabrera is starting to look like Miguel Cabrera again.

Miggy stumbled through the first month of play, escaping April batting .270 with just 4 HR and 12 runs driven in. What seemed to be stranger than the lack of power display was his poor performance against the Cleveland Indians in April.

While he normally feasts off of Tribe pitching, they held the Best Hitter of All Time to no hits and just reaching base once via a base on balls. When Cleveland left town, Miggy was hitting a miserable .206.

Miguel Cabrera proved he was human with a career worst start to the season. But, to no one’s surprise, his bat has come alive.

More from Detroit Jock City

He was awarded the AL Player of the Week, the 14th of his career, last week in which he dominated opposing pitching with a .500 average (11-22) with 3 HR and 6 RBI, and yes, even a three-bagger. It was that type of week for Cabrera.

Fresh off the well-deserved acknowledgement, Cabrera doesn’t look to be coming back down to earth anytime soon.

Over the last two games, Miggy is has six hits in his last six at-bats with three long balls and four RBI.

Cabrera has been a frequent visitor to first base coach Omar Vizquel over the last seven games of play. He’s slugging an unbelievable .560/.600/1.280 with five home runs. He’s hit more home runs in one week (5) than he did all of April (4).

Not only has Miggy shown off with several tape-measure long balls, but he’s done so to every part of the field. He’ll turn on a ball and send it into the Tigers’ bullpen. Or, he’ll drive a ball to straightaway center field and watch it land in the shrubbery. Or maybe he’ll just wait back and flick it over the right field wall and into the hands of a lucky fan. Who knows? Either way, he’s unbelievable.

While on this jaw-dropping power surge, Cabrera has been seeing everything and absolutely mashing it. He hasn’t missed anything. Literally.

What might be more important to Cabrera would be how his team has managed to turn it around over the last week of play. Thanks to his efforts, Miggy and Co. are now back above .500 (23-22), and winners of four straight and eight of their last nine.

But, why are we so often surprised and amazed when he goes on these streaks of pure dominance? He’s the best hitter to ever play the game, what else should we expect?

He’s a Triple Crown winner, he’s captured four batting titles, a two-time Most Valuable Player, a World Series champ, a ten-time All-Star, and a victor of six Silver Sluggers.

He’s the type of player you create when you design your own player on a video game. He’s got the power, the consistency, and the swagger.

It’s Miguel Cabrera’s world, and we’re all just living it.
