A formal unveiling of the NFL’s Color Rush uniforms is expected next month but a new round of rumors suggests something interesting for the Detroit Lions.

Remember when a twitter account claimed to have the inside scoop on the NFL’s Color Rush uniforms for the 2016 season? Well, it’s back for another try at it and what they have to say about the Detroit Lions certainly is interesting.

The Lions have been known to wear a traditional throwback look in the past but it was little more than a plain look in familiar colors. Red isn’t a color normally associated with the Lions but it actually is part of their history and would make for a buzz-worthy choice to serve as inspiration for the team’s Color Rush uniform to be worn on Thanksgiving Day. A little bit of (albeit non-traditional) old school, a little bit of new school.

The Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys website delves into the team’s red uniform history (visit site for images):

More from Detroit Jock City

"As shown here, the Detroit Lions wore red jerseys for a short period of time in 1948 and 1949. This radical departure was thanks to the Lions new coach – shortly after a syndicate headed by Edwin J. Anderson purchased the Detroit franchise in 1948, Alvin “Bo” McMillin, a successful coach at Indiana University, was named head coach and general manager. One of McMillin’s first acts in his new duties was to change the color of Lions game uniforms. According to the 1948 Detroit Lions Media Guide, he did just that and brought Indiana’s coloring scheme with him.We have read that not only were red jerseys worn, but that black jerseys with white numerals were also worn in 1948. The all-black uniforms were worn for big games, much like how Notre Dame wears green uniforms. The Lions, however, did not fare well in 1948 and finished with a 2-10 record. In 1949, the Lions brought back the Honolulu blue and silver uniforms for home games, but continued to wear the scarlet uniforms on the road. That season, Detroit finished 4-8.In 1950, the Lions abandoned the scarlet uniforms and returned to the Honolulu blue and silver coloring scheme."

The following video also briefly mentions the red look.

This “NFL Leaks” twitter account has already proven to be unreliable following their last round of supposed leaks so let’s not take this as anything more than an interesting option to ponder while we wait for the official unveil. After all, with enough guesses, anyone is bound to be right eventually.
