Deyonta Davis

The top-ranked player on Ford’s big board to get a Pistons mention is Michigan State forward Deyonta Davis, sitting at number 16.

As the ranking indicates, there is a very good chance that Davis is not available when the Pistons’ turn comes up with the 18th pick. He has regularly been a lottery pick in various mock drafts and Ford notes a draft range that puts the Pistons near the end of what is expected.

Form Ford:

"Upside: He’s a terrific athlete with a very good NBA body. He’s bouncy and he has the potential to be a very good shot-blocker and rebounder. He has shown some semblance of a nice midrange jumper. He actually has pretty big upside. Downside: He’s rather raw offensively. He seems like he’s a step behind other players his age on that end. His workouts didn’t go especially well, underscoring that he’s probably a project in the NBA. Draft range: Nos. 9-21, with the Raptors, Magic, Jazz, Suns, Nuggets, Celtics, Pistons and Hawks as his top landing spots."

Davis seems a good fit considering Van Gundy’s comments about not expecting big contributions for a rookie and that what they do in the draft won’t impact free agency. That puts an upside project like Davis squarely in play if he is still available at 18.
