MLB All-Star Game: Picking the American League Starters
By Matt Snyder
Designated Hitter: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz announced that 2016 would be his final season in Major League Baseball, but he wouldn’t be retiring because his skills have deteriorated. Ortiz’s 189 wRC+ leads all of baseball by a wide margin.
His current 1.118 OPS mark would represent his career best, a remarkable feat for a 40-year-old.
Ortiz doesn’t offer anything in the way of defensive value (which is fine for a designated hitter), but he’s everything you want in a superstar slugger.
