There has been a bunch of movement over the past week as we are seeing a number of teams go through inevitable slumps in a season as long as this. The Cubs finally have been knocked off the thrown as the Giants continue to win close games. The Rangers, Orioles and Indians are also putting pressure on some of the other top five teams as both Washington and Boston have shown some weakness as well.

I try not to overreact to recent play as I know a mini slump throughout the course of a 162 game season is going to happen to even the best teams. The Cubs are experiencing that right now as their bats have gone just a bit quiet more often than not of late. The best teams in baseball are anchored by really strong pitching and sometimes that is all it takes for a team to continue to win ballgames while their bats are cold.

The opposite can be said about our Detroit Tigers. They currently have 6 full-time batters hitting .290 or better on the season and are basically a top 10 offense in virtually every major category. They don’t have the luxury of throwing out quality pitching options every night and that is why you see them sitting at .500 right now.

They also have got absolutely embarrassed this season by the Cleveland Indians losing all 9 games that they have played head-to-head.

Let’s take a look at the rankings this week. As I mentioned, there is some considerable movement this week as even the Braves have found a way to make a nice jump.
