The Detroit Red Wings offseason kicks into high gear on Friday as the calendar flips to July. The Red Wings as usual are rumored to be in the mix for a few free agents. To extend that playoff streak for another year the Red Wings have to fill some needs.

The needs for the Red Wings are obvious. Defense, defense, defense and more defense. Another weakness is they need a bona fide scorer.

First, lets start with the Red Wings own unrestricted free agents: Darren Helm, Kyle Quincey, Drew Miller and Brad Richards.

The Red Wings re-signed Drew Miller earlier this week to a one year deal worth a little more than a million dollars.

Kyle Quincey and Brad Richards look like they won’t be re-signed, so that leaves us with Darren Helm.

In my opinion I believe Darren Helm is gone. I think Miller coming back and Andreas Athanasiou hopefully being up full time leaves no room for Helm.

After trading Pavel Datsyuk‘s contract to the Arizona Coyotes, the Red Wings now have over $20 million in cap space.

With all that cap space the Red Wings have enough money to make a couple big moves. Here are my five UFA’s the Red Wings need to target.
