Number 5: Justin Schultz – Defensemen, 25 years old

This is a name some fans might remember because back in 2012 the Red Wings had a lot of interest in signing him. Schultz went to the University of Wisconsin and became a free agent back in 2012. He ultimately ended up signing with the Edmonton Oilers.

Schultz underachieved last season as he recorded his lowest point total of his career. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and got his first taste of playoff action. In his career with the Oilers though, Schultz was a steady defensemen.

In what is a very weak defensive free agent class, Schultz could be a hidden gem for a team.

Schultz may have been a bad minus player when he was with the Oilers but that Oilers team was terrible. I think he will show how good he is if he goes to a solid team were he doesn’t have to be THE guy. TSN.CA rates him as the 25th best UFA in their top 40 FA list.
