The Detroit Pistons picked up Boban Marjanovic in free agency and introduced him at a media press conference today.

Point guard Ish Smith and power forward Jon Leuer were the Detroit Pistons‘ primary targets in free agency but they took the opportunity to add center Boban Marjanovic as the frenzy died down. As a restricted free agent, the San Antonio Spurs had the opportunity to match the Pistons’ offer to retain Marjanovic, but chose not to after pursuing other players.

Now officially a Piston, the team introduced Marjanovic at a press conference late this morning.

In introducing Boban, Stan Van Gundy noted his ability to score, protect the rim and play with great effort.

Stan Van Gundy admitted that Marjanovic shooting 76% from the free throw line was attractive to the team and noted Boban’s ability to get to the free throw line last season despite playing limited minutes.

At 28-years old, Marjanovic is one of the older players on a very young team – a team that Van Gundy said has a chance to grow together with only Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Aron Baynes as core players not signed for at least the next three years.

In signing Marjanovic, the Pistons have some insurance in case Baynes opts out of the final year of his contract after next season. Van Gundy didn’t sound resigned to losing Baynes next year but the possibility he won’t be with the team beyond next season has to be considered and it is clear the Pistons have done just that.

The initial news of the Pistons signing Marjanovic to an offer sheet was mostly met with reactions of “they are going to pay what for who?” in Detroit, Spurs fans were seriously bumming their big man’s impending departure.

At 7-3, Marjanovic becomes the second-tallest player in Pistons history, behind only the 7-5 Chuck Nevitt who played for the Pistons in the 80s.
