Outside Linebacker

1. DeAndre Levy
2. Josh Bynes

The nature of the NFL today is that defenses spend little time in their base defenses as offenses have opened up through the passing game more and more over the years. That will have the Lions in nickel a lot of the time rather than their base 4-3, taking a linebacker off the field.

The return of DeAndre Levy is a big deal for the Lions defense as he had cemented himself as one of the league’s best 4-3 outside linebackers. His ability to defend the run or pass will be a big boost to the defense and we should expect to see him on the field for the majority of the team’s defensive snaps.

Josh Bynes is the other nominal starting outside linebacker but he’s likely to be off the field when the Lions move out of their base defense. He could also be lifted if the Lions want more of a pass rushing presence, but Bynes should be projected for the third-most snaps among Lions linebackers behind Whitehead and Levy.
