Quarterback

1. Matthew Stafford
2. Dan Orlovsky

The polarizing Matthew Stafford is entrenched as the starting quarterback without anyone on the roster to challenge for that spot. What happens behind him isn’t set in stone but it would be a surprise if sixth-round draft pick Jake Rudock unseats Dan Orlovsky as the team’s primary backup.

Orlovsky is likely safe for one more season due to his veteran status while the Lions can either carry Rudock as a third quarterback or try to stash him on the practice squad. Going the practice squad route with Rudock opens up the possibility that the Lions lose him to another team but the chances of that happening would seem small and worth the risk.

Whatever happens in the depth chart behind Stafford, the Lions are in trouble if either Orlovsky or Rudock have to see the field this season. That’s been the case since the departure of Shaun Hill so quarterback depth should be a major focus in the coming years.
