Detroit Red Wings Games Will Be Streamed Online Starting This Year
By Matt Snyder
Detroit Red Wings games on Fox Sports Detroit will be available to subscribers via online live stream beginning this season.
The NHL and Fox Sports Regional Networks reached an agreement last night that will allow games to be streamed online beginning with the 2016-17 season. For fans in Michigan, that means Detroit Red Wings games will be available on digital devices through Fox Sports Go.
Cord cutters won’t benefit from this deal, however, as the service requires a paid cable subscription (with a package carrying Fox Sports Detroit) to authenticate the service.
This deal puts the NHL on the same footing as the NBA and MLB who currently allow authenticated subscribers to access games online.

The NHL clearly plays fourth fiddle (to the NFL, NBA, and MLB) in the United States when it comes to major sports, so the NHL and their regional broadcast partners can’t fall behind when it comes to getting their content in front of fans (and potential fans).
BroadcastingCable.com has the following quotes from the NHL’s VP of Media Distribution:
"“We are pleased that hockey fans that subscribe to Fox Sports Regional Networks will now have more ways to follow their favorite NHL teams,” said David M. Proper, NHL executive VP of media distribution and strategy/business affairs. “We believe increasing accessibility to NHL games benefits not only fans, but the League and its partners.”"

And a similar quote from the president of Fox Sports Regional Networks:
"“We see in-market streaming as a valuable extension of the customers’ pay-TV subscription,” said Jeff Krolik, president, Fox Sports Regional Networks. “We’re happy to partner with the NHL to bring in-market streaming to hockey fans, and we look forward to collaborating with the league on this effort.”"
