August means two things for football fans: preseason football and the newest Madden release. On Tuesday, EA Sports released their player ratings for the 2017 edition of Madden, including grades for the Detroit Lions. Let’s take a look at what Madden thinks of this year’s Lions team.

The Stars

With the retirement of former Madden cover athlete Calvin Johnson, the Lions have a distinct lack of star power on the roster this season, which is reflected in the ratings of the top players. Two players, Ezekiel Ansah and Darius Slay, received a grade of 90, the highest on the team, while Golden Tate (89), DeAndre Levy (87) and Matthew Stafford (85) round out the Lions top five.

It’s hard to argue with these grades. The top of the Lions’ roster took a serious hit from last season when Johnson (95 in 2016) was still on the team and Levy (93 in 2016) was not nursing injuries. Ansah got a slight bump from 88 from last year and Slay jumped up from 84, both of which were well-deserved upgrades. Tate and Stafford both got one-point upgrades as well.

Now, time for some analysis.
