Detroit Lions Offensive Position Battles Heat Up Against Pittsburgh
Running Back
With Ameer Abdullah out, Theo Riddick got all of the first-team reps at running back but had trouble running between the tackles. Zack Zenner saw the most action of the group, coming in after Riddick left after one drive, and his technique seems to have improved from last season, as he did a much better job of fighting through contact and gaining extra yards.
Stevan Ridley did not enter the game until the third quarter and put in an uninspiring performance, dancing around in the backfield and struggling to get upfield. Dwayne Washington made his presence known with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and also showed some burst on a couple of offensive snaps. George Winn struggled the most among the Lions’ backs, fumbling once and failing to run the ball effectively.
While Abdullah and Riddick’s starting positions are basically secure, Zenner is the team’s clear number three right now. He played above Ridley and Winn and contributed on special teams where he helped to spring Washington’s return. Washington is making a case for roster inclusion, and might have passed Winn tonight. Winn has simply not impressed so far in camp.
