Penn State Nittany Lions

September 24, Penn State at Michigan, TBA (To be announced)

The NCAA sanctions have expired and the Penn State program is rebuilding. Head Coach James Franklin has recruited a top-25 class in each of the past three years and the talent level is rising. That being said, Franklin can’t get out of his own way. After a 7-6 record in 2015, Franklin has replaced both coordinator positions in an attempt to find a way to win.

Knowing he needed to replace quarterback Christian Hackenberg, new offensive coordinator Joe Moorehead has decided to change the scheme. Penn State will shift from a pro-style to a no-huddle spread offense. Finding a competent player to run this system is priority one.

Another major concern for the Nittany Lions is their offensive line. They struggled against Michigan last year, as the wolverines feasted on Hackenberg all day. They return six players who all started at least five games last year, but they need to show major improvements.

Sophomore running back Saquon Barkley is easily the most talented player Michigan will have faced at this point of the season. Watch this video from fall practice, he’s #26 in white:

That’s an impressive run. But that offensive line still looks rough.

On defense, Penn State lost some talent to the NFL and will be rebuilding their defensive line. The linebackers are experienced but the secondary may be their best unit. Overall, no one really stands out but by the time we get to week four someone may step up.

Prediction:

Saquon Barkley is a stud. Expect Michigan to keep most of their focus on stopping him. Penn State is building talent but they aren’t ready to deal with a team like Michigan just yet.

Michigan wins (4-0, 1-0 in Big Ten)
