Illinois Fighting Illini

October 22, Illinois at Michigan, 3:30, TBA

Last year Illinois fired head coach Tim Beckman one week before their first game and the team predictably struggled. Now with Lovie Smith (formerly with the Chicago Bears) as their new head coach, the Fighting Illini should have some stability.

Quarterback Wes Lunt is talented, but is also learning his fifth system in his five years at Illinois. He also just lost his number one target, wide receiver Mike Dudek, to an ACL injury. They will likely have to rely on running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn to take on a bigger role in the offense.

On defense, their strength is in the front seven, led by potential first round pick defensive end Dawuane Smoot. Inside linebacker Hardy Nickerson (Cal transfer and son of Illini defensive coordinator) will bring production and experience to the middle of the defense. Their secondary is the biggest weakness as they will have three new starters in 2016.

Prediction:

Homecoming in Ann Arbor should be a fun time for the Wolverines. With a bye week to prepare for this match-up, Harbaugh should have the Wolverines ready to roll. As long as they don’t get caught looking ahead to next week, Michigan should be able to use this game as a tune up.

Michigan wins (7-0, 4-0)
