Michigan State Spartans

October 29, Michigan at Michigan State, TBA

The Spartans have several key starters to replace. Specifically, at quarterback, wide receiver, left tackle, center, and defensive end. That’s a lot of talent at important spots. But there’s a reason Michigan State has finished in the Top-10 in each of the last four seasons: Mark Dantonio is an excellent developer of talent.

Fifth year quarterback Tyler O’Connor was recently named the Spartans starter. He showed what he was capable of last year, when he took over for injured Conner Cook, and led the Spartans to a victory over Ohio State. His experience should help them adjust to so many new starters.

Running back L.J.Scott hopes you remember his great performance against Iowa and not his game against Alabama where he managed only eight yards rushing. R.J. Shelton  is one of the most versatile players in college football and will be a featured wide receiver in 2016. Also, keep an eye on Freshman Donnie Corley who’s been making noise in camp. Tight end Josiah Price is another veteran piece to this offense who will contribute all over the field.

The prize player on this team is defensive lineman Malik McDowell who could hear his name called in the Top-10 of next year’s NFL draft. McDowell’s ability to play end and tackle at such a high level is terrifying for most offensive lineman.

Riley Bullough leads a strong linebacking group from the middle, with four players fighting for two spots on the outside. This depth will allow the Spartans to stay fresh and active.

The secondary is the weakest part of this defense and they still have two exceptional athletes at the safety spots. Strong safety Montae Nicholson is a special player and free safety Demetrious Cox has seen time all over the secondary.

Expect the defense to carry the developing offense for the first seven weeks leading up to this rivalry game.

Prediction:

How do you make people forget about last year’s gaffe? Win. And win convincingly. This will be much harder than it looks on paper. If the Wolverines want to live up to expectations, it must start in East Lansing. This is easily the most important game so far this season, expect Harbaugh to have them ready.

Michigan wins (8-0, 5-0)
