Week One: Michigan State v. Furman, September 2

Series History: First meeting.

What Happened Last Time: First meeting.

The Furman Paladins:

Despite being one of the most powerful classes in Dungeons and Dragons, the Paladins finished next to last in the FCS Southern Conference in 2015 with a 4-7 record. They started two different quarterbacks, who combined for only ten passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. They allowed nearly twice as many rushing yards per game as they gained and gave up 186 points off turnovers in 11 games. In their only game against an FBS opponent in 2015 they lost 42-3 to West Virginia.

The Paladins have never played a Big Ten opponent before in their 110-year football history and do not appear to have improved significantly from last season, returning most of their starters and only adding two three-star freshmen during the offseason.

Forecast:

There is no reason to expect anything but a blowout in this one. In fact, if the game is remotely close at any stage, Mark Dantonio should be upset with his team. If Furman sent a troop of real paladins back in time to fight Leonidas and company, it might be a close fight. However, this game will not be close. Whatever the spread is, expect the Spartans to cover.

Final Prediction:

Michigan State: Many touchdowns.

Furman: Maybe a field goal, some nice pictures.

Should I Watch It?: Normally I would say “no” unless you’re into bloodbaths, but the game is on a Friday night and the evening doesn’t feature any really interesting matchup. Besides, who cares, college football is back!

Season Record: 1-0
