The USMNT travels to the Caribbean to take on St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a crucial World Cup qualifying soccer match.

The United States Men’s National Team enters the final two games of the group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying in decent position but their margin for error is small. The USMNT enters play on Friday in second place in Group C, but Guatemala sits just a single point behind.

The two two finishers in each of the three groups will advance to the fifth and final round of qualifying. Those six teams will play a double round robin known as the “Hexagonal” or “Hex”. The top three finishers from there will qualify to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

St. Vincent are probably the worst CONCACAF (the confederation of North and Central America and the Caribbean) team left at this stage in qualifying and should represent an easy win for the United States, but questionable results against inferior sides (like a draw to Trinidad and Tobago and a loss to Guatemala) are what have put the USMNT in this somewhat precarious position.

More from Detroit Jock City

A reasonable person could argue that the United State should have already clinched a spot in the Hex by now, as Mexico has.

Coach Jurgen Klinsmann will likely rely heavily on the players that helped advance the USMNT to the semifinal round of this summer’s Copa America Centenario, but injury will prevent key players from contributing.

Star forward Clint Dempsey has been sidelined with an irregular heartbeat, central defender John Brooks was a roster scratch due to a sore back, and midfielder Jermaine Jones has been out of action since early July with a knee injury. In addition to the injuries, Michael Bradley will have to serve a suspension for yellow card accumulation. Still, the United States should be plenty deep to vanquish the likes of St. Vincent.

Many USMNT fans would like to see the younger generation get more time on the field, but the necessity for a win makes it likely that Klinsmann will once again rely on his (aging) veteran core.

Predicted Starters

Goalkeeper: Brad Guzan

Defense: DeAndre Yedlin, Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, Fabian Johnson

The United States can clinch advancement tonight, however, but that requires a win over St. Vincent and a Trinidad and Tobago win over Guatemala. A draw between T&T and Guatemala would be nearly as good, however, as Guatamala would have to make up a massive (+6) goal differential to win a tiebreak over USA in their final match.
