Detroit Lions news celebrates the end of Color Rush speculation, rumors and leaks with the unveiling of black uniforms that won’t actually be worn.

After six months of talk about Color Rush uniforms, we finally know what the Detroit Lions version of the NFL marketing ploy will look like.

While the rumor mill churned for those six months, there were rumors and supposed leaks that said the Lions Color Rush color would be everything from black to red to silver. In the end, it turned out black was correct with the announcement coming a day after the most compelling leak yet.

But wait…In a twist, the Lions announced that while they have a Color Rush uniform, they won’t actually wear it. The team put out the following release with the announcement:

"A Detroit Lions alternate uniform was among 24 NFL Color Rush uniforms unveiled by the NFL today. All 32 teams now have a NFL Color Rush uniform to exclusively wear on Thursday Night Football. The Lions’ Color Rush uniform features a black jersey with blue numbers outlined in white trim, black pants with a thick blue stripe between two silver stripes and two white stripes as well as black socks. New Lions’ Color Rush fan jerseys are available for purchase at The Stadium Collection at Ford Field and online at Shop.Detroitlions.com.The Color Rush uniform is the most substantial addition to the Lions uniform package since 2009 when they introduced their current look. The team permanently added a commemorative patch to the uniform in 2014 in honor of late owner William Clay Ford Sr. who passed away earlier that year. The Lions are one of nine teams that won’t be wearing their Color Rush uniform in 2016. Some teams were not scheduled for Thursday Night Football and others are visiting teams playing in the game that will wear all white uniforms due to the color combination with the home team not being distinguishable for all viewers.“Our fans’ passion for the team’s uniform and overall brand continues to be evident,” said Detroit Lions Team President Rod Wood. “While we won’t wear a Color Rush uniform on the field this year, we look forward to the possibility of wearing a Color Rush uniform in 2017.”In 2015, the NFL and Nike launched the Color Rush program with uniforms for eight teams playing in four Thursday Night Football games last season. The Color Rush program is expected to continue in future seasons and any club not wearing their Color Rush uniform on the field this year will have the opportunity to do so in future seasons."

While some fans (inexplicably) have fond memories of the former black alternate jerseys and called for their return, for many they are a painful reminder of the Matt Millen era.

While the Lions won’t wear this black Color Rush uniform this season, it seems like we should expect to see them at some point in future seasons.
