Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning: Game Time, TV, Radio, Live Stream
By Mike Rizzo
The Detroit Red Wings open the 2016-17 season tonight against the team that ended their last two seasons, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Is this the year the streak finally ends?
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight as they open their 2016-17 season. The Tampa Bay Lightning have ended the Red Wings season two years in a row and are early Stanley Cup contenders.
Meanwhile the Red Wings are predicted by many to miss the playoffs. In fact I have seen only one source that has them in the playoffs.
Whether it’s ESPN, Yahoo, TSN or Hockeybuzz nearly all of them agree that this is the year the Red Wings playoff streak finally ends. With one exception from a writer on ESPN.com.
I have voiced my frustrations with the direction that Ken Holland has had this team on for a while. You can find them here, here, and here. Even with all the issues I’ve had with the Red Wings this off-season, I think they make the playoffs.
I have a lot of faith in Petr Mrazek and I believe Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar have rebound seasons. I think Frans Nielsen will hold his own as he replaces Pavel Datsyuk.
On the other end of the spectrum the Tampa Bay Lightning and Steve Yzerman can do no wrong. Not only did he re-sign All-Star Steven Stamkos but he re-signed Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov. He also has the Lightning as Stanley Cup favorites again.
The Lightning are my pick to win the Atlantic Division this season.
As the Red Wings open their season against the Lightning this will be a good test of how they matchup with the Lightning. Also keep an eye out for Thomas Vanek. If he can find his scoring touch, he could end up being the steal of free agency.
But just like the last couple seasons, defense is going to be the difference between being a borderline playoff team to Stanley Cup contenders.
