The Detroit Red Wings look to rebound after a tough loss in their season opener on Thursday night. They stay in Florida to face the Panthers.

The Detroit Red Wings confirmed every Red Wings fan worst fears for this season in their opener Thursday night. DEFENSE. Red Wings fans for awhile have worried about this teams defense and it came to pass on Thursday against Tampa.

The game started off well as newcomer Thomas Vanek scored the first two goals. As I said in my preview article on Thursday, keep an eye on Vanek because he could end up being the steal of free agency.

The Red Wings led 2-0 after one, but Jonathan Drouin scored on the power play and the Red Wings would respond just a minute later as another newcomer Frans Nielsen scored. The Lightning would score again and after two it was 3-2 Red Wings.

But sadly, the third period came. The rails went off the tracks and the Lightning scored three straight goals to lead 5-3 with three minutes left in the game. Danny DeKeyser scored to tease the fans – I mean to make it a one goal game… The Lightning would extinguish the hopes relatively quickly as Valtteri Filppula scored a empty netter.

The Lightning ended up winning 6-4. Petr Mrazek didn’t play well but the shortcomings for the Red Wings defense is the biggest issue.

When a team scores four goals in a game you would think they would win that game. The Red Wings defense couldn’t help Mrazek and Mrazek wasn’t as good as he needed to be.

For the Red Wings to make the playoffs, Mrazek has to have a Vezina Trophy-type of season. I know it’s only one game but that game didn’t ease any fears that this fanbase had with the defense.

As the Red Wings head to play the Florida Panthers, they caught a break as Panther star Jonathan Huberdeau suffered an Achilles injury and is out for three to four months. That’s a big loss for the Panthers and possibly a killer for their postseason hopes. Hopefully the Red Wings can capitalize tonight.

More from Detroit Jock City

Petr Mrazek will get the opportunity to redeem himself as he gets the start tonight. He had a rough game on Thursday and the Red Wings need him to rebound tonight. The Red Wings defense especially needs a bounce back game tonight.
