QUARTERBACK

Cam Newton ($8900) Panthers @ Saints – Step back two months to your annual fantasy draft. Cam Newton was pretty close to a consensus lock as the #1 overall quarterback in your drafts and a guy that looked poised to have a huge season. Right now Cam is averaging the 9th most points per game at the quarterback position and missed a game as well. Coming off his worst performance of the season against the Falcons while also sustaining an injury running the ball, it makes some sense that people would be hesitant to pay all the way up to Cam. However, this Saints defense is one of the absolute worst in the league both against the pass and the run. This is a prime spot for Cam to get right and get back into the good grace’s of his owners. I like paying this price tag this week in what should be lower than expected ownership.

Alex Smith ($6800) Chiefs @ Raiders – This is likely not a real popular call this week as Smith has never been an “exciting” fantasy option. This week they take on a Raider defense that is allowing 330 passing yards per game, which is dead last in the NFL so far this season. This puts them 2nd worst in football through 5 weeks in fantasy points allowed to the QB. With the emergence of the Raiders offense the past few weeks, I think this game could be sneaky high scoring and Smith’s super cheap price tag is enticing. Smith is still averaging 270 yards a game this season and the Chiefs have quietly been airing it out at a very high rate.

Russell Wilson ($8400) Seahawks vs. Falcons – The only team allowing more fantasy points per game to the QB is Wilson’s opponent this week, the Falcons. Wilson is similar to Cam in that he was expected to be one of the best quarterbacks for fantasy this season and has so far been underwhelming. The Seahawks had their bye last week giving Wilson a bit more time to get healthy and is coming off his best game this season. Jimmy Graham appears to be re-emerging as a serious weapon for Wilson and that only increases the chance for him to have a multiple touchdown day. I think Wilson has another game similar to what he had in Week 4, 300 yards and 3 TD’s.

Others I Like – Drew Brees ($8500), Colin Kaepernick ($6400), Tom Brady ($9000)
