Detroit Lions Can’t Overcome Errors In Loss To Texans
Caldwell makes questionable challenge, onside kick decisions
Jim Caldwell will be the center of discussion across the state this week as he made two decisions which were widely questioned. In the third quarter, Osweiler threw to DeAndre Hopkins, who had the ball for a brief moment before dropping it. Tavon Wilson picked up the ball and started running, but the officials blew the play dead.
Instead of throwing the challenge flag, Caldwell opted to keep the flag in his pocket and the Texans would eventually score a field goal on the drive.
After the Lions scored with three minutes left to get within one possession, Caldwell opted to attempt an onside kick instead of kicking the ball deep, despite having three timeouts. The kick failed and the Texans ran out the clock with two first downs. Caldwell gave his reasoning after the game:
Injury Report: Ngata, Washington inactive, Reiff leaves briefly
The Lions had Eric Ebron and Theo Riddick back on Sunday but were without defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (shoulder) for the third consecutive week. Running back Dwayne Washington appeared to be a healthy scratch after being a full participant in practice this week. Tight end Cole Wick (knee) and tackle Corey Robinson (ankle) were both inactive after being listed as questionable on Friday.
Tackle Riley Reiff, who showed up on the injury report with an illness, left briefly in the second quarter, apparently with the same problem, but returned soon after.
