The Spartans jumped in front early, scoring the first nine points on their way to taking a 17-2 lead with 14:10 left in the first half, including seven quick points for freshman Miles Bridges. Arizona quickly made up the deficit, however, as the Spartans went on an eight-minute scoring drought. The Wildcats scored 17 unanswered points, taking a 25-21 lead and carrying the advantage into the break.
With 11:08 left in the second, a layup by Lourawls Nairn gave the Spartans their first lead of the second half, but Michigan State could not build on it and the teams traded the lead back and forth as the second half wound down.
With Michigan State trailing 63-60 in the final minute, Nairn’s three-point attempt died on the back of the rim and fell through the hoop, tying the score with seven seconds left. Arizona’s Kadeem Allen took the ensuing inbound pass and dribbled the length of the floor to the hoop, scoring a layup with 1.9 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 65-63 lead. Allen then knocked away Michigan State’s attempt at an inbound pass, preserving the win for Arizona.
