Injury Report: Higby, Kieler, Holmes leave hurt

Michigan State’s offensive line took a couple of hits on Saturday despite the win. Left guard Tyler Higby was injured on a successful fourth-down quarterback sneak during the Spartans’ first possession of the second half and could not put any weight on his right leg. He had to be helped off the field and was on crutches after the game. Kodi Kieler, who has been dealing with injuries, started at right tackle for the Spartans but left the game in the second half. Running back Gerald Holmes also injured his leg late in the game and required assistance leaving the field.

Spartans continue to use two-way players

Head coach Mark Dantonio is no stranger to getting creative with his personnel units. While that trend’s continuation this season may be in part due to injuries and a lack of experience on Michigan State’s roster, it played out again on Saturday as freshman wide receiver Donnie Corley once again saw significant minutes as a defensive back, freshman Justin Layne started at cornerback after playing both corner and wide receiver this season and senior guard Brandon Clemons started at defensive tackle.

Corley made his presence felt—literally—on both sides of the ball with two tackles, including a big hit on Rutgers’ Harlon Barnett in the first quarter, and two receptions for 18 yards. Layne contributed three tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and Clemons recorded a tackle. 71 different Spartans played in the game as Dantonio gave his reserves more run down the stretch.
