By Erik Schlitt
Detroit Lions strong safety Miles Killebrew had the best game of his career last Sunday vs the Jacksonville Jaguars. This film study will show you how he made the most out of his 12 snaps.
When the Detroit Lions selected safety Miles Killebrew in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, it generated lots of excitement in the fan base. His athletic profile, combined with his highlight reel hits, was something fans were looking forward to seeing on Sundays.
Killebrew played his college ball at Southern Utah and his lack of experience with a high level of competition, proved to be a hurdle, early on in his rookie season. But the Lions had a plan for him and have slowly been brought him along, using him in packages that feature his skill set.
This past Sunday against Jacksonville, Killebrew was limited to nickel and dime formations on defense and only played on third downs. Jacksonville ran 14 third down plays and Killebrew played on 12 of them.
Here’s a breakdown of those 12 plays:

Summary
Detroit stopped Jacksonville 10 times on 3rd down and Miles Killebrew made four of those stops by himself. While Killebrew is still limited to specific roles on defense, his responsibilities are expanding. As the season progresses, expect both his roles and responsibilities to expand. But for now, he is making the most of his snaps.

With Miles Killebrew expanding his role, Bob Quinn’s first draft class appears to be quite successful. Seven of his 10 picks are either starting, rotating, or have a scheme specific role. One is on IR, and another on the practice squad. That is the type of draft success rate is one any general manager would enjoy.
