Third Base: Travis Fryman

Travis Fryman was the single most valuable Detroit Tigers player of the 1990s, according to FanGraphs’ implementation of WAR. He spent eight years with the Tigers from 1990 through 1997, first as a shortstop and then as a third baseman.

Fryman achieved his 26 wins above replacement more through a reliable steadiness than a burst of superstar production. He accumulated at least two WAR in each of his eight seasons with the Tigers.

He was named to four All-Star teams (including three-straight from 1992-1994) and won one Silver Slugger award (at shortstop). In fact, he was the only player not named Alan Trammell or Cal Ripken to win that award at that position between the years 12 years between 1983 and 1994.

Fryman hit a combined .274/.336/.443 for the Tigers in the 1990s with 149 home runs (only Cecil Fielder hit more home runs for the Tigers in the 1990s) in a franchise-leading 4,792 plate appearances during the decade. He left for Cleveland in 1998 where he played for five seasons to finish out his career.
