Mark Dantonio will keep current staff in 2017

Despite the disappointing 3-9 finish and missing the bowl season entirely, head coach Mark Dantonio said after the game that he plans no changes to Michigan State’s coaching staff. “I’m not even considering letting any of our staff go,” he said. The current staff has been in place for the last two seasons, which saw the Spartans win the Big Ten, win the Cotton Bowl and reach last season’s College Football Playoff.

Injury Report: Scott, Terry, others leave hurt, McDowell misses

Junior defensive tackle Malik McDowell, expected to declare for next year’s NFL Draft, missed his third straight game after picking up rib and foot injuries earlier in the season. Running back Madre London also missed due to injury. Senior safety Demetrious Cox missed due to a violation of team rules, according to head coach Mark Dantonio.

Several Spartans went down with injury during Saturday’s game, including quarterback Damion Terry and running back L.J. Scott. Terry left the game after taking a hit to the head and did not return after being checked on the sideline for a concussion. Scott left the game in the first half and was wearing a brace on his left leg, although he returned in the second half. Senior lineman Brandon Clemons left the game with apparent ankle injury and did not return. Linebacker Andrew Dowell also left the game but returned in the second half.

More quarterback problems for MSU as season ends

Head coach Mark Dantonio opted to start Damion Terry, who will compete for the starting job in 2017, at quarterback on Saturday. Terry completed seven of 12 passes for 101 yards and carrying four times for 13 yards before leaving the game with an apparent concussion. Senior Tyler O’Connor, in his last game with Michigan State, replaced him and fared little better, completing 17 of 33 passes for 118 yards.

With Brian Lewerke still out with a broken leg, walk-on Colar Kuhns was the only other quarterback to dress as freshman Messiah deWeaver did not.

Elsewhere In The Big Ten

Iowa (8-4, 6-3) upset #16 Nebraska (9-3, 6-3) 40-10 on Friday night. #2 Ohio State (11-1, 8-1) beat #3 Michigan (10-2, 7-2) 30-27 at the Horseshoe, all but clinching a spot in College Football Playoff. The Wolverines lost their shot at the Big Ten East with the loss and Penn State’s win and will now have to wait out other results to learn if they will be in the College Football Playoff. #6 Wisconsin (10-2, 7-2) will head to the Big Ten title game after beating Minnesota (8-4, 5-4) 31-17 to clinch the Big Ten West.
