Mickey Redmond

If you’re a millennial like myself, you’re more likely to recognize Mickey Redmond as the Red Wing’s colour commentator than as a hockey player. Mickey Redmond did not have a very long career with the Detroit Red Wings, but he did make his time memorable.

Acquired via trade from the Montreal Canadians during the 1970-71 season, Redmond joined center Alex Delvecchio and Marcel Dionne as being one of the only bright spots on the “Dead Wings”.

A skillful winger with a heavy shot, Mickey scored over 50 goals in a season twice in a Red Wings uniform.  His last great year was the 1973-74 season, where he scored 51 goals and 26 assists for a total of 77 points. The following year Redmond suffered a freak back injury, which would force him into early retirement.

Though he only got to spend ten years in the NHL, Redmond compiled a very impressive resume. He is a two time Stanley Cup Champion (both with Montreal), a two time all-star, and scored 177 goals and 310 points in his short 317 game stint as a Detroit Red Wing.
