Gordie Howe

An absolute no brainer pick here; the late Gordie Howe is the greatest Red Wing of all time. In fact, he’s probably greatest winger in the history of hockey. Gordie Howe’s longevity is absolutely legendary, having played 26 seasons in the NHL, and 32 seasons of professional hockey. Howe spent 25 of those seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

Gordie’s greatness cannot be pin pointed or broken down into any one category. The typical NHL star may be great at one or two facets of the game; but not Howe.  How excelled at everything. Need an intimidating physical presence on the ice? Howe can be that. Need a goal scorer? Howe can be that too.  Gordie’s ability to excel at everything led to him being dubbed Mr. Hockey.

Howe’s career accomplishments are far too many to count, but here are just a few:

  • Most points by a Red Wing (1809)
  • Most All-Star appearances (23)
  • Four time Stanley Cup Champion
  • Six Time Art Ross Trophy Winner
  • Six Time Hart Trophy Winner
  • Most NHL Seasons played (26)

If his WHA years are included, Howe has accumulated 2358 points with 975 goals, both of which are good for second all-time, behind only Wayne Gretzky. Howe’s longevity and consistently elite level of play cement him as a legend of the sport.
