The Detroit Red Wings wrap up their California trip tonight as they face the San Jose Sharks. The Red Wings beat the Kings 4-0 on Thursday night.

The Detroit Red Wings played their best game in weeks on Thursday night. The Red Wings faced the Los Angeles Kings and scored three first period goals to lead 3-0 after one.

Thomas Vanek got the scoring started just under two minutes into the game. Andreas Athanasiou scored a little later in the first to make it 2-0 and Vanek would score again late in the period to make it 3-0. Anthony Mantha added a goal in the third to make it 4-0 and that was his fourth goal in five games.

Vanek and Athanasiou were huge for the Red Wings, especially Athanasiou, who had a goal and two assists against the Kings and showed he needs to be in the lineup every game. He also deserves playing time and hopefully Jeff Blashill starts giving him more time. Athanasiou, Mantha and Dylan Larkin need to be the new cornerstones for this franchise.

Jared Coreau got his first career shutout and he’s really outplayed Petr Mrazek lately. No starter has been named yet but I believe he should start tonight.

Things were not all good though, the Red Wings did not convert on the power play again. October 19th is the last time they scored a power play goal on the road.

The Red Wings are five points back of second place in the Atlantic and thank goodness they play in the Atlantic. Looking at the standings, most likely the Metropolitan Division is going to have five teams in the playoffs so it’s important that the Red Wings keep getting points and stay in the playoff race in the Atlantic.

Tonight the Red Wings face the San Jose Sharks who have lost three straight games. The Sharks are coming off a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

Here is all the important information for tonight’s game:
