The Detroit Red Wings look to rebound tonight after losing 6-3 to the Sharks on Saturday night. The Red Wings head to Chicago to face the Blackhawks tonight .

The Detroit Red Wings, after shutting out the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, got smoked by the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

The Red Wings got the scoring started in the first period when Thomas Vanek scored twelve minutes into the game.

Unfortunately the Sharks would respond and respond in a hurry. The Sharks scored three goals in three and a half minutes and the first period ended with the Sharks up 3-1.

What’s really unfortunate about that is the Red Wings were really playing well for the first period until those three minutes.

Inconsistency has been one of the big problems for this team so far. The Red Wings play well for a portion of the game but have a meltdown late in games.

After giving up three straight goals, Jared Coreau was pulled after the period and replaced by Petr Mrazek.

After no goals were scored in the second period things unraveled in the third. The Sharks would score two goals in under three minutes to put the game out of reach,

The Red Wings would add a couple goals but unfortunately the Sharks added a goal themselves and they would win the game 6-3.

Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou scored the third period goals for the Red Wings and it’s clear that those two along with Dylan Larkin need to be the cornerstones of this franchise.

As I have said before, the future of this team offensively is very bright with Athanasiou, Mantha and Larkin.

The power play and defense on the other hand is killing this team. For the ninth time in the last 16 games, the Red Wings allowed four goals or more.

The Red Wings also did not score on the power play. The last time they scored a power play goal on the road was October 19th.

This team is very lucky they play in the Atlantic Division were they still have a shot at the playoffs. As of this writing the Red Wings are only seven points out of third place.

Mike Green and Justin Abdelkader returning soon will be big for this team. Especially Green who was playing very well for them before he was injured.

Tonight the Red Wings face their old division rival the Chicago Blackhawks. These two teams have been headed in completely different directions the last few years.

The Blackhawks are perennial Stanley Cup contenders while the Red Wings have snuck into the playoffs the last few years.

The Blackhawks have the best record in the West while the Red Wings are last in the Atlantic. The Hawks future is bright while the Red Wings…ok I’m depressed now.

As of this writing no starter has been announced but most likely Mrazek will start tonight after Coreau was very shaky on Saturday.
