Detroit Lions: Handing Out Awards for the 2016 Season
By Zac Snyder
Special Teams Player of the Year: Matt Prater
Special teams were a consistent bright spot for the Lions during the 2016 season because of the contributions of several players. That made Special Teams Player of the Year one of the tightest votes. Matt Prater and Sam Martin each got three first place votes but Prater edged Martin for total points.
Player | First | Second | Third | Points |
Matt Prater | 3 | 3 | 15 | |
Sam Martin | 3 | 1 | 2 | 13 |
Don Carey | 1 | 2 | 4 | |
Andre Roberts | 1 | 2 | ||
Don Muhlbach | 1 | 1 | ||
Johnson Bademosi | 1 | 1 |
There was no going wrong with either Prater or Martin. There is no denying the season Prater had in hitting a number of big kicks, including in both wins over the Vikings, and Martin turned in one of the best punting seasons in NFL history.
Looking at the vote, Martin’s second place finish may have been due to some credit going to coverage unit players with Don Carey and Johnson Bademosi also getting some votes.
