The Detroit Red Wings start an important stretch tonight. They open the second half of the season tonight against the New Jersey Devils at Joe Louis Arena. With the Red Wings being seven points out of a playoff spot, the Red Wings have to turn things around in a hurry or they might be in sell mode soon.
Once again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing if this team missed the playoffs or if they sold off parts. Thomas Vanek and Mike Green could fetch a decent haul and maybe even Jimmy Howard if he gets healthy soon. The only players on this team that should be untouchable are Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha.
The Red Wings trail Boston by seven points for third in the Atlantic but have three games in hand.
Tonight and Friday night the Red Wings face two teams that on paper they should beat: the Devils tonight and the Islanders on Friday. Both the Red Wings and Devils ended the first half on losing streaks. The Red Wings are losers of four straight games while the Devils have lost three of their last four games. The Devils have scored the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference with just 113. That should bode well for the Red Wings tonight.
Jared Coreau is expected to start tonight as neither him or Petr Mrazek have been consistent since Jimmy Howard got hurt. Speaking of Howard, it looks like he’s going to be heading to Grand Rapids soon for a conditioning stint.
The Red Wings are definitely now in must-win mode. They have 11 games left before their bye week and most likely Ken Holland will decide what to do at the March 1st trade deadline during that week.
Some good news for the Red Wings, Dylan Larkin should return tonight after missing the last two games.
