A subtle change to the Detroit Lions‘ logo has appeared throughout the team’s online presence, which may suggest bigger changes for the 2017 season.

For the first time since the Detroit Lions rolled out an updated logo and uniforms in 2009, the team has apparently made another change. There has been no official announcement from the team, but astute observers will notice a change to the logo the team is now using on their website and social media channels.

Can you spot the difference?

That’s right, the black outline has been replaced by gray. There is also a new team font showing up.

The timing might be seen as random but some but it is in line with the team sending out season ticket renewal packets in early February in past years. It makes sense that any changes would be made to be included in a significant marketing initiative like that.

It’s a small change for now, and again I’ll say that nothing official has been communicated from the team, but it could signal bigger changes ahead, most notably to the team’s uniform. Is black on its way out from the team’s color scheme entirely? It would seem that a color not showing up in the team’s logo wouldn’t be included elsewhere. The updated font would have an impact as well as the blue end zones and uniform numbers were in the style of the previous font.

Black was introduced alongside the team’s traditional Honolulu blue and silver back in 2003 when the team was under the direction of Matt Millen. For some fans, the color is a reminder of just another mistake of the Millen era, but others remain fans of the black alternate uniforms. The presence of this one color has been a surprisingly polarizing topic with fans, but it appears the current leadership sides with fans against black being part of the color scheme.

Rod Wood has indicated some uniform changes could be coming for 2017, and this logo change could indicate that the change is an update to the current look minus the black. If that is the case, an official announcement might not be too far off in the future.
