Detroit Lions news takes a look at a fan concept for a new Detroit Lions uniform set and likes what it sees, with just a few suggested changes.

There are a lot of really talented graphic artists out there who put out some great uniform concepts. I am not one of them, but fortunately Brandon Moore is and put out a concept for the new Detroit Lions uniform even though he is a Miami Dolphins fan.

To be clear, what you are about to see is just a concept Moore designed on his own. It is not a leak and it may not look anything like what the Lions’ new uniforms ultimately look like when they are unveiled in April. That being said, I love a lot of what he did here and hope very much that the real uniforms come out looking something like this.

We know the facemask will be changing because black has been removed from the team’s color scheme. That would seem to leave blue, the facemask color before black, and gray, the facemask color before blue, as the options. My preference is for gray and I’m glad to see Moore go with that here. It’s a nice complement to the gray matte helmet, which gives the uniform a modern look without resorting to obnoxious styling reminiscent of Arena League uniforms like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers received in their most recent update.

I might stick with white numbers on the home uniform but that wouldn’t be a big sticking point for me. I would also add balance to the helmet stripe by adding a second blue stripe to flank the gray. I appreciate what he’s trying to do in pay homage to the team’s old logo that featured a Lion in front of a blue and silver bar, but it feels offbalance as a helmet stripe. It does work on the pants side stripe, however.

It’s attention to detail to the team’s past that I think makes this concept noteworthy. The Lions have used the two bars behind the modern logo on some marketing/promotional materials recently and the logo and color scheme update hint at a desire to get back to the team’s roots in some regard.

The Lions have been tight-lipped regarding what the uniform unveiling will actually include other than that they will unveil four uniforms. Most have assumed that to mean there will be a home, road, throwback and Color Rush uniform unveiled, but I don’t believe a Color Rush uniform has ever been unveiled by a team on its own. As far as I can tell, all previous Color Rush unveilings have been direct by Nike and/or the NFL.

So if a Color Rush isn’t included, how would the Lions unveil four uniforms? The answer is in mix-and-match combos. Take the concepts above, but put the home pants with the road jersey. Boom, you might have what the Lions consider a different uniform, even though all you’ve done is swap some of the parts. That isn’t something the Lions have done yet but has become popular with the rest of the league.
