NFL Draft 2017: Detroit Lions Seven-Round Mock Draft 2.0
By Zac Snyder
Sixth Round
The Lions have said Jake Rudock will have every opportunity to earn the primary backup quarterback job but that implies there will still be some competition. There isn’t anyone in-house to push him yet, suggesting the Lions will either add a low-cost veteran and/or another developmental quarterback through the draft.
The latter is the better bet considering Bob Quinn is on record as saying it makes good business sense to frequently draft quarterbacks. Scouting reports note a lack of elite arm, but praise his mental acuity to help make up for it. Don’t discount smarts as a key trait the Lions like in their quarterbacks.
The Lions interest in this group of tight ends was some of the more interesting buzz to come out of the Combine. That means they could be looking for a running mate to pair with Eric Ebron earlier in the draft, especially after all the impressive on-field workouts a number of the tight ends put on.
But if other draft needs win out when it comes time to make the picks, as happened in this mock, the Lions may be forced to look for options later on. One such could be USC’s Taylor McNamara. He has some ability in the passing game and as a blocker, but has room for improvement in both areas.
