Michigan State Routs Miami In NCAA Tournament First Round
The Michigan State Spartans rolled to victory over the Miami Hurricanes, 78-58 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
The #9 Michigan State Spartans soundly defeated the #8 Miami Hurricanes in their first-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, 78-58 in Tulsa, Okla., to move on to the second round of the tournament.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and led by as many 12 before the Spartans’ offense roared to life and launched a 30-8 run over the last 10:52 to take a 38-27 lead at halftime. Seven different Spartans scored in the first half and Michigan State shot 14/28 (50%) from the floor.

Michigan State continued to roll in the second half, to shooting 16/25 (64%). The Hurricanes did not put together a run of multiple field goals for the first 12 minutes of the half and shot 10/26 (38.5%) percent from the field in the half. The Spartans led by as many as 22 as they cruised to a 78-58 win.
Michigan State’s freshmen dominated the game throughout. Nick Ward led the Spartans with 19 points on 8/9 shooting and also picked up seven rebounds. Miles Bridges scored 18 and led with nine rebounds. Josh Langford added 13 points and both Cassius Winston and Lourawls Nairn Jr. contributed five assists.
The Spartans only made six of their 20 three-point attempts (30%) but shot 12/14 from the free throw line. Michigan State outrebounded the Hurricanes 36 to 23 and18 of the Spartans’ field goals were assisted.
Jaquan Newton led Miami with 16 points. Devon Reed scored 12 and Bruce Brown had 11 while leading the Hurricanes with four assists. No Hurricane had more than three rebounds. Miami shot 21/52 (40.4%) from the floor and 4/16 (25%) from beyond the arc. Miami had nine steals in the game as a team.

Michigan State will take on top-seed Kansas, who defeated 16-seed UC Davis 100-62 on Friday, for a spot in the Sweet 16 on Sunday at 5:15 on CBS.
