Michigan State Eliminated By Kansas In Second Round

The Michigan State Spartans came up short against the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

The Michigan State Spartans‘ season came to an end on Sunday as they lost to the Kansas Jayhawks 90-70 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Miles Bridges left the game and headed to the locker room early in the first half after taking an elbow to his hip. The Spartans held serve during his absence, tying Kansas 8-8 during the five minutes he was out. He ended the half as Michigan State’s leading scorer with 13 points.

The lead changed 11 times in the first 15 minutes. The game was tied at 27 before a 9-0 run by the Jayhawks gave them a lead which they would extend to 40-29 in the last two minutes. A three-pointer by Joshua Langford and three free throws by Bridges trimmed the deficit to 6-0 at halftime. The Jayhawks made 16 of 32 field goal attempts (50%) in the first half. Michigan State made 13 of 28 (42%).

Michigan State cut the lead down to one, 54-53, with 12:18 left in the game, but Kansas held on to its lead, going on a 13-3 run to take a double-digit lead and closing the game on another 13-3 run to put away a 90-70 win.

The freshmen had another big game for Michigan State, scoring 52 of the Spartans’ 70 points. Bridges led the Spartans with 22 points and eight rebounds in what might be his last game for Michigan State pending his NBA Draft decision. Nick Ward scored 13 points but only played 20 minutes due to foul trouble. Joshua Langford scored 13 and Cassius Winston had eight assists off the bench. The Spartans shot 25/57 (43.9%) overall and 8/23 (34.8%) from beyond the arc, 3/11 (27.3%) in the second half.

Frank Mason III led the Jayhawks with 20 points and five assists. Landen Lucas picked up a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kansas shot 34/64 (53.1%) from the floor, made 14/15 (93.3%) free throws and out-rebounded Michigan State 36-28.

The Jayhawks will take on the fourth-seeded Purdue Boilermakers in the Sweet 16 next week.
