Round 7

Another safety after leading off with Obi Melifonwu? Remember, even that pick was based on a coming rebuild of the safety depth chart, particularly at free safety if Glover Quin doesn’t figure into the team’s long-term plans.

With any late round pick, it’s all about finding ways to contribute and that’s what makes Ford an option. As a three-year starter at Auburn, Ford is used to playing against high-level competition and has experience playing both safety and nickel corner.

Even more importantly for late-round picks just hoping to earn a roster spot, Ford played special teams and could enter the mix as a returner or play a role in kick and punt coverage.

Maybe there isn’t a role for Ford right away, but a look in training camp and possibly a stint on the practice squad before a roster spot opens up in 2018 wouldn’t be a waste of such a late pick.
