Detroit Lions Draft 2017: Players Who May Fall to the Lions Third Round Pick
By Ash Thompson
Tarell Basham, DE, Ohio
Tarell Basham is an easy prospect to like. He has the measurables to please the analytics crowd. Basham also dominated his admittedly lower level competition well enough to please the tape heads. His 15 reps on the bench are concerning. He will see benefit from a year with an NFL strength and conditioning coach.
Basham would immediately find a role on the Lions as a situational pass rusher with his burst and athleticism. He is a high motor guy, constantly fighting his way toward ball carriers, and chasing plays from behind. He can also handle a few zone drops with a much higher level of comfort than the Lions defensive linemen did last season.
His pass rush repertoire needs work, as he is as raw as any prospect in the draft. He doesn’t understand how to use his hands to beat blockers. Basham will need to develop a Plan B for his pass rush, plan A simply involves running around the tackle. He has a lot of room to improve. He is nowhere near maxed out as a player.

Bahsam is a player with both an immediate role for the team, and an obvious position to develop in to. He would be a great pick for the Lions in this draft. Jackson is an adaptable talent and has the potential to be made in to a lot of different things. He just needs proper coaching. Basham is 6’4″ and 269lbs with room to add to his frame. He could become a perfect complement to Ziggy Ansah in a year or two for the Detroit Lions. He would be a great Lions draft pick.
