Round 5

It’s coincidental that Nathan Peterman and Joshua Dobbs are mentioned back-to-back here but their stories are intertwined with their time at Tennessee overlapping. It was Dobbs grabbing control of the starting quarterback job in Knoxville that led to Peterman’s departure.

There is a lot to like about Dobbs, including his athletic ability, but Lance Zierlein’s profile for NFL.com notes a lack of development in the playing time he got at Tennessee.

"Dobbs is hardly incompetent as a passer, but he hasn’t shown as much growth with his ball placement and accuracy as scouts had hoped to see from this former four-star prospect. Dobbs has decent size and is an outstanding runner outside the pocket which could appeal to a team looking for a developmental quarterback with play-making ability."

The physical abilities are what stands out when watching Dobbs but it is his intelligence that will likely appeal to Bob Quinn and the Detroit Lions. Dobbs has taken the student part of student-athlete seriously by studying aerospace engineering at Tennessee, and posted one of the highest Wonderlic scores of this year’s quarterback class (and higher than Darren Rovell).
