Round 7

After featuring four mid- to late-round quarterback prospects who have demonstrated intelligence, we end with one who has become known for doing some really stupid things. Chad Kelly has a laundry list of red flags, ranging from run ins with coaches to public altercations to generally questionable decision making. Add in a torn ACL that ended his senior season, and there are plenty of reasons to avoid Kelly.

However, there are some reason to take a chance as well. Kelly has traits that project to starter-quality and if the last name is familiar, it’s because he’s the nephew of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly.

If they make the pick, it shouldn’t take long for the Lions to find out if things are going to click with Kelly or if they are better suited to move on. Sometimes just getting a look to find out is enough to make a pick worthwhile.

Consider last season when the Lions drafted Jake Rudock in the sixth round, but did not keep him on the 53-man roster heading into the season. He ultimately returned as a member of the practice squad, and was promoted to the active roster to block a move by the Chicago Bears, but there was a time when he could have been gone for nothing.

Drafting Kelly means you might end up with nothing. The Lions were prepared for that situation with Rudock, so that alone shouldn’t scare them from Kelly.
