Detroit Lions Draft 2017: A Tight End for Every Round
By Ash Thompson
Adam Shaheen, Ashland
Shaheen has been a draft darling since the early days of the evaluation process. every year there are a few players that have somehow slipped through the cracks and never made the jump to the top level of college football.
He is a former basketball player who transferred to Ashland to make the change to Football. In his second season he set the Division II record for tight ends with 70 receptions. Shaheen is a perfect example of how much the draft process is about potential. The only experience he has against high level competition is the 2017 Senior Bowl. He impressed teams and media.
Shaheen is an enormous man at 6’6″ and 278 lbs but moves with the fluidity of a much smaller man. He is not a straight line burner on the track, but he does not take long to reach his top speed. With the ball in his hands he is a difficult runner to bring down.
Those block and release to the flat patterns the team gave Pettigrew before his injuries mounted will be deadly with Shaheen running them. He does need a lot of coaching, but improved daily at Senior Bowl practices according to the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock during the broadcast.
