Detroit Lions draft 2017: Mock draft roundup for day two
By Matt Snyder
Who will the Detroit Lions take on day two of the NFL Draft? Here’s a look at second and third round mock drafts by experts from around the web.
The Detroit Lions will make two selections on Friday evening (barring trades) with their second round (overall pick number 53) and third round (overall pick number 85) draft choices.
Here’s a look at some experts who re-did their mock drafts for the second and third rounds after Thursday’s first round selections were made.
Walter Football
Round 2 (No. 53): Chris Wormley, DL, Michigan
The excellent Walter Football makes a local pick for the Lions in the second round, projecting Chris Wormley from Michigan. Wormley played both defensive end and defensive tackle for the Wolverines and could bring that versatility to the Lions.
Round 3 (No. 85): Jordan Leggett, TE, Clemson
The Lions are in need of a tight end after they moved on from Brandon Pettigrew in the middle of last season. It remains to be seen if Eric Ebron is any sort of long-term answer at the position as well.
MMQB – Emily Kaplan
Round 2 (No. 53): Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State
Like Walter Football, Kaplan makes a defensive line selection for the Lions and sticks with a product of a Michigan school. She, however, opts for Michigan State Spartans defensive tackle Malik McDowell.
Round 3 (No. 85): Kareem Hunt, RB, Toledo
Draftniks know more about Kareem Hunt than the average fan does, but he’s touted as perhaps the most sure-handed ball carrier in the NFL draft. The Detroit Free Press notes that he fumbled one time in his Toledo career — and recovered the loose ball himself.
NFL.com – Lance Zierlein
Round 2 (No. 53): Chris Wormley, DL, Michigan
Defensive line sure is a popular selection for the Lions in the second round. Zierlein mirror’s Walter Football’s projection of Wormley. Zierlein lists him as a defensive tackle, though any team drafting him would likely want use him all over the line depending on down and distance.
Round 3 (No. 85): Cam Sutton, DB, Tennessee
Cam Sutton played cornerback at Tennessee but some think he could play safety in the NFL as well. Sutton suffered a broken bone in his leg that caused him to miss most of his senior season, but he returned healthy in time to play in the Senior Bowl where he drew positive reviews.
Pride of Detroit – Ryan Mathews
Mathews gives us two mock draft scenarios for day two of the draft. Here’s what he has down for scenario number one (click on the above link for the second scenario).
Round 2 (No. 53): Quincy Wilson, DB, Florida
Mathews strays from the script here and opts for a defensive back. Wilson put up good numbers at the NFL Combine and would make the Lions two-for-two in drafting Florida Gators in this year’s draft.
Round 3 (No. 85): Carlos Henderson, WR, Louisiana Tech
Henderson is a big play waiting to happen. Pro Football Focus calls him the “best after-the-catch receiver in the entire draft”. He ran a 4.46 40-yard dash at the combine and could be a dynamic contributor to the offense.
CBS Sports – Dane Brugler
Round 2 (No. 53): Jordan Willis, DE, Kansas State
Again sticking with the defensive line theme, Brugler projects the Lions to take defensive end Jordan Willis in the second round.
Brugler did not make mock draft selections for the third round.
